BLAST FROM THE PAST: BRAD LACKEY, AMERICAN HERO AND GP STAR

Brad Lackey became the first American 500cc World Champion in 1982, but prior to that he raced for Kawasaki in the GP’s. This shot, captured by Mark Kiel shows Brad chasing down SWM rider Jean Claude Laquave en route to a win in Belgium. The year was 1979. Lackey won more motos than any other competitor in the ’79 GPs, but his Factory Kawasaki had reliability issues and Brad finished in fourth, behind Honda’s Graham Noyce (who became their first GP World Champion) Gerrit Wolsink and Andre Malherbe.
