THE WEEKLY FEED: RICKY JOHNSON-THE 1988 DOMINATOR AND A NEW SX CONTENDER?

A HISTORY LESSON

Rick Johnson, testing the 1988 Honda CR500 on a fifth gear wide road jump at Palm Ave. RJ won 61 AMA National motocross events during his career and championships in Supercross, the 250 Nationals and the 500 Nationals. His teammate David Bailey was hurt at the end of the ’86 season and Rick had to dig deep since he no longer had his main rival and friend to battle with. Rick finished behind Jeff Ward in Supercross, but dominated the 250 and 500 Nationals. The next year RJ came out firing winning the AMA Supercross title, the 500cc Outdoors and was a member of the USA winning Motocross des Nations team for the fourth time.

 

BRIGHT SPOT

JGR’S Justin Hill provided a much needed spark to a Supercross series that has been painted the yawns. With Roczen and Barcia out, Eli randomly brilliant and Marvin fighting back from injuries- Justin Hill pops in the class and rips! After a stellar heat race, he looked to be in contention for the win when he clipped Musquin’s rear wheel. Still, his performance was stellar and a needed shot of adrenalin to the series.

 

ROCZEN ANNOUNCES…AND IS BRILLIANT

Ken Roczen hopped in the booth with Ralph and Jeff at Tampa and gave a little color during the heat race. He was SUPERB! KR gave insight that the commentators are lacking about track setup, tactics and bike setup mated to passion and good communication abilities. BRING HIM BACK!

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

Ketchum, Idaho 1982. I’m parked on my 430XC Husky and that’s Paul Clipper’s Suzuki PE sitting next to me. Bob Smith, the owner of Smith Goggles flew down to Van Nuys Airport in his Cessna TurboProp, picked up Clipper and I, stuffed our scoots in the Cessna, then headed back to Idaho. We rode for two days (along with my buddy Scott Boyer) and had an epic time.
