BLAST FROM THE PAST: Joel Robert
Joel Robert shows his incredible prowess man handling his CZ during the GP wars. He won his first World Championship in 1964 on a CZ, followed by five more World Championships in the 250 class. There were racers with style, Joel was absurdly gifted, a showman and an important caveat in the growth of the sport of motocross.
TESTING-TESTING- Beta 300RR
I went out with Ryan Koch yesterday and we were testing the new 2020 Beta 300RR. The machine is pretty much painted from a new canvas via the chassis, suspension and a motor which has a counter-balancer to fight off vibration. It’s oil injected, carbureted and features a dual map switch with two traction modes. The power is very tractable, it carbureted beautifully and targets the rider looking to make traction via a short shift and use the meat of the powerband to make traction. Ryan has spent lots of time on an older Beta 300 and was impressed. He gave good marks to the suspension, but did mention that it was a shade stiff initially, but then started to break-in. It has a very trick push button release saddle, Sachs suspension and Brembo hydraulics. More to come!
Notice the high tech hydration system and quick fill that District 37 desert racing star Gary Conrad used in 1967!
Ake Jonsson searched for some Maico magic in his Works YZ. Maico forks for handling, a down pipe in an effort to find a smoother and more tractable power band were bandaids that never cured his search for perfection.
Jonny Walker finished on the podium at the Spanish WESS Enduro round.
Pro Circuit is proud to expand their Ti-2 silencer line by introducing silencers for 1993-1997 CR125R and 1992-1996 CR250R models. Also newly released is an R-304 race silencer for the 2019-2020 YZ65 model. Ti-2 Shorty Carbon Kevlar/Titanium Silencer: The Ti-2 is similar to the popular R-304 silencer except it is constructed with a carbon Kevlar shell, titanium tubing and titanium end-cap. The R-304 Shorty Silencer was developed as a full-race two-stroke silencer. The compact design of the short aluminum canister offers optimum performance gains.

That’s Mike Webb on the infamous Honda 160. The arena is Annuals, a pit in the west end of the San Fernando valley where we rode. The year, 1971. The gear, somewhat on point. Jofa, duck bill, Bell RT, Hallman gloves. The Levis, flannel and cowboy boots maybe not so much. Our budget was a little lean back then!
WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY
This is around 1985, maybe ’86. Photography is a huge part of being a magazine editor and I learned hugely from Paul Clipper and Fran Kuhn, both former editors for DB. In looking at this photo I can honestly say that I’d make my kids wash their hands if they met this guy on the street!
