ADVENTURE BIKE SPOTLIGHT| DUCATI SCRAMBLER DESERT SLED

The Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled is a throwback machine. They call it the Desert Sled, but this baby would be a handful on a hard-packed dirt road. The basic machine is a stripped-down, 803cc V-twin with a higher seat, a reinforced frame, adjustable suspension, engine armor and Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires. The design team gets an A+ for building a machine that has that retro appeal that makes you want to cruise it down Hollywood Boulevard wearing your Steve McQueen Persol shades.

The Scrambler Desert Sled Black Edition is a special version that adds a stamp of personality to the off-road character. The name Desert Sled refers to standard motorcycles over 500 cc that were modified by riders for use in the Californian desert with knobby tires, reinforced suspension, spoked wheels and engine protection plates to protect the bike against the debris of impassable desert roads.

The Scrambler Desert Ducati is designed to be something different in the eyes of the owner. It’s a stripped-down, air-cooled V-twin, with styling from the ’60s. The motor is based on the one in the 796 Monster and produces about 75 horsepower. In this configuration it displaces 803cc and has been tuned for low-end torque.

The name Desert Sled is in reference to big machines from ’60s that were ‘stripped down’ to be ridden off-road in the Mojave desert.

The Desert Scrambler is rather small. If you’re an adventure bike guy who’s used to climbing aboard an R1200GS, the Ducati will feel like a mini bike. The seat height is low enough for almost any vertically challenged rider to touch the ground flat-footed. It makes you feel confident and brave in the dirt.
