ABBOTT TAKES JOHN BURR 6 HOURS OF GLEN HELEN
Destry Abbott teamed with Gary Sutherlin and Mark Tilley to win the 6 Hours of Glen Helen.
A new season of Glen Helen’s endurance racing series started off with the Six-Hour this weekend. This year, the series has a new sponsor in John Burr Honda. It was also announced that a series champion would be named based on overall results of the three races, with the 24-Hour counting for double points. One thing that did not change was the nature of the course, which is one of the most diverse venues in the country. The 10.5 mile course had motocross, EnduroCross, pavement, single-track, fire road and a section of the Lucas Truck Racing facility. It was again designed by the staff of Dirt Bike Magazine.
The winning team also had a bit of Dirt Bike Magazine involvement. Destry Abbott brought out his KX450 to team with Gary Sutherlin, and invited Dirt Bike Associate Editor Mark Tilley to take a few stints on the bike. The trio won by about six minutes. The Husqvarna 310 team consisting of Cory Gaffunder, Jamie Lanza and Brent Eastman harassed the Kawasaki team for most of the early laps. After a rear-brake hose came loose, the Purvines Racing team of Talon Taylor and Justin Morrow worked back up to third.
It’s always the Ironman class that is the most impressive at these events, and this time was no exception. It was also the largest class with 30 riders. Dirt Rider’s Kris Keefer won the class, besting last year’s triple Ironman champion Brian Adams. For full results go to www.glenhelen.com
