2023 SAN DIEGO SUPERCROSS RESULTS

After a week off because of the Oakland rainout Supercross is underway again. The rest of the 450 class perhaps had a little too much time to think about Eli Tomac’s dominant performance at Anaheim 1. It was mush the same story at San Diego with Eli looking every bit as good as he did two weeks earlier. Once again he won his heat and the main, making for a perfect start to the young season. Cooper Webb also repeated his performance from round one by finishing second. But this time he was much closer to the lead on the final lap. The 250 class also held more of the same with Jett Lawrence  winning over RJ Hampshire. For extended coverage of the 2023 Supercross season click here.

Eli Tomac had a flag to flag victory in Heat One. At first, it looked like Justin Barcia had something for the champ, but he faded back a few seconds halfway through the race. That gave Jason Anderson all he needed to make an aggressive pass that put Barcia on the ground. Barcia got up to claim third. Early in the race, Chase Sexton crashed in front of Aaron Plessinger, who hit the downed bike. Plessinger got up to finished sixth, but Sexton’s bike was damaged. He would have to go to the LCQ.

450 HEAT 2

Ken Roczen pulled a convincing holeshot in heat two with Dylan Ferrandis and Adam Cianciarulo behind him. AC put a move on Ferrandis fairly early, but the two remained locked in battle. In the meantime, Cooper Webb had a terrible start and then had several incidents that put him outside the top nine. Malcolm Stewart started around sixth, but he really came alive at the end of the race. On the two laps, Stewart  passed Ferrandis, Cianciarulo and Roczen to take the heat win. Webb managed to come up to fifth.

Adam Cianciarulo got the lead coming out of the first turn and remained in front for a few laps over Cooper Webb. Then it was Webb’s turn to lead, but Eli Tomac was coming. It was on the fifth lap that Tomac took over, and he would remain in front all the way to the end. Webb lost ground at first, but made a hard charge at the end to push Tomac on the final lap. There were some fireworks between Justin Barcia and Chase Sexton early in the race. Sexton went down, but gradually reeled Barcia in towards the end. Ken Roczen acted as a safety buffer between the two. Notable crashes went to Jason Anderson and Malcolm Stewart, both of whom were looking fast before hitting the ground.

250 HEAT 1

RJ Hampshire won an unusual Heat One.

250 Heat One saw Enzo Lopes and RJ Hampshire pull away from the rest of the pack. But their race was interrupted by a red flag. When the downed rider was handled, the race was restarted in a staggered order. Even though Hampshire was leading when the red flag came out, Lopes technically had been in front of Hampshire when they crossed the line, so he was staged in front  with about four laps of racing to go. Hamshire used two of them to make the pass and claim the win.

250 MAIN EVENT

Jett Lawrence had complete control of the 250 main from start to finish. His lead was never that great, but it seemed it could always pull a little farther ahead when there was a threat. Levi Kitchen had a great start but fell, leaving second place to be hashed out between Cameron McAdoo and RJ Hampshire. RJ eventually came out on top of that battle.
