2023 SALT LAKE CITY SUPERCROSS RESULTS

Finally, the 17th round of a tumultuous 2023 Supercross season arrived. Chase Sexton became the 450 champion–that much was certain going in, although the celebration had to wait until the end of the night. The only rider with a mathematical chase of taking that away was Eli Tomac, who wasn’t able to ride because of the injury he sustained in Denver last week. Chase rose to the challenge, though, and set the fastest qualifying time, won his heat then dominated the main event.  As for the 250 class, it was the final East/West Showdown. Both titles were already settled, so all that remained was to see which Lawrence brother got the bragging rights. This time around, it was Jett, who had a much  better start while Hunter had to fight up to sixth from the back of the pack. 450 HEAT 1

Dean Wilson got the start, but Ken Roczen took over quickly and then gradually pulled away. Wilson did an impressive job at making second place his own; he soon pulled clear of everyone else. By now, the light rain had turned into something more substantial and it was clear that the track was getting more slippery with every lap.

450 HEAT 2

Aaron Plessinger was in front for most of the second heat. He got the start with Adam Cianciarulo and Chase Sexon in tow. Before long, Sexton was all over Plessinger but couldn’t seem to find  a way into the lead on the increasingly slick track. Then Plessinger made it easy by missing his brake lever and blowing past a turn. Sexton won easily while Plessinger had to work to capture the final transfer position–which he did on the final lap. Cianciarulo was second ahead of Grant Harlan and Justin Starling.

450 MAIN

It was Chase Sexton’s night. He was fast, smooth and unchallenged as he walked away with the main event and the championship. Aaron Plessinger was buried in the pack after his poor gate pick, but it didn’t take him long to catch Adam Cianciarulo in second. Ken Roczen only made it around one lap. He twisted his knee in the mud and retired to the pits. In the end, Sexton’s margin of victory was over 18 seconds and he lapped up to fifth place. Plessinger was second ahead of Justin Hill.

250 EAST/WEST SHOWDOWN

RJ Hampshire got the holeshot but Jett Lawrence wouldn’t let him get away. Hunter Lawrence, on the other hand, gated poorly and then got hung up on a downed rider. He would spend most of his race battling with Haiden Deegan, who also got a bad start. Jett took over the lead before the halfway mark and had an uneventful race while his brother had to fight his way up to sixth.
