2023 OAKLAND SUPERCROSS RESULTS

The 2023 Monster Energy Supercross tour made a road-burning trip all the way across the United States for the rescheduled Oakland Supercross this weekend. The rig drivers and mechanics had to be on top of their game to make the tight schedule and allow the resumption of racing after last week’s thriller in Tampa. The 450 class didn’t disappoint with Eli Tomac taking the win over a hard-charging Cooper Webb and a blazingly fast–but mistake prone–Chase Sexton.  Now, the points are tighter than ever.  In the 250 class, the result was more predictable with Jett Lawrence taking a routine win over RJ Hampshire and Cameron McAdoo. The first 450 heat turned out to be a parade with Ken Roczen pulling the holeshot, but unable to pull away from Jason Anderson and Justin Barcia. Toward the end, Anderson had the opportunity to slam Roczen, but backed off at the last second, possibly because he’s on probation for rough riding.

Cooper Webb and Aaron Plessinger made it a KTM one-two at the start of 450 heat two. Chase Sexton and Eli Tomac weren’t far behind, though, and the race became extremely tight up front. Plessinger was soon passed by both Sexton and Tomac and began to fade out of contention. Halfway through the race, there were three passes in a single turn. Going in, Sexton passed Webb, and going out, Tomac passed them both. Tomac held on to the lead for the rest of the race, but the three top riders were tight all the way to the checkered flag.

450 MAIN EVENT

Chase Sexton’s speed was on display right from the start of the main event. He got out front with Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac following–but unable to make ground anywhere. Tomac passed Webb and picked up the pace, but he was ever so gradually losing ground. Both pulled away from Webb, who was remained a few seconds ahead of Aaron Plessinger and Ken Roczen. Behind them, a battle was brewing between Jason Anderson, Adam Cianciarulo and Justin Barcia. Barcia eventually banged Cianciarulo out of his way and closed on Anderson. It was on lap 12 of the 18 lap main that Sexton’s brilliant ride came apart. He went down all by himself, allowing a grateful Tomac to take the lead. He still had enough space to retain third, but Webb could smell blood and soon went by. In the final laps, Webb also made up a surprising amount of ground on Tomcac. Two laps from the end, Tomac made a mistake and suddenly Webb was on him. Tomac held on, but it was a very close finish.

RJ Hampshire got out front early, but he had two of the fastest riders right behind him. Cameron McAdoo was second right ahead of Jett Lawrence.  Within a few laps, Lawrence was around McAdoo for second, then he was gifted the lead when Hampshire washed out in a turn. RJ got up quickly and was soon past McAdoo for second. Jett slowly pulled away while the battle for fourth heated up between Max Vohland, Pierce Brown and Levi Kitchen. Brown seemed the fastest of them, but kept making mistakes. By the end of the race, Lawrence had an 18 second lead over Hampshire and McAdoo. Pierce fell on the final lap to lose fourth to Kitchen.
