Supercross returned to Anaheim Stadium for round three of the 2023 season this weekend. Eli Tomac has been unstoppable in the 450 class, just like Jett Lawrence in the 250 class, but both saw a reversal of fortune. This was the first round using the Triple Crown format, which has three main events in each class. For Tomac it was a combination of mediocre starts and a bad crash that took his chances of a third straight win away, while Chase Sexton would go 1-5-1 to take his second career Supercross win. In Jett Lawrence’s case, crashes in races one and two were his undoing. Levi Kitchen, on the other hand, had a consistent night to collect his first career win with a 3-2-2 score. 450 RACE ONE
Chase Sexton got the holeshot with Ken Roczen right on his tail. Eli Tomac was back in sixth. As the race developed, Sexton and Roczen pulled away while Adam Cianciarulo held on the third as long as he could. Eventually Cianciarulo dropped back a few positions while Tomac worked his way up to third, where he would finish. There was a little last lap drama between Jason Anderson and Cooper Webb. Webb ended up with the short end and dropped it, to finished seventh.

WIthin a few laps, Plessinger was challenging Roczen for second, but then he went down. Chase Sexton also went down, dropping out of the top 10. Anderson remained in front, but only by a few seconds throughout the race. In the final laps, Eli Tomac pressured Roczen into a mistake. Roczen recovered, but then had to contend with a hard-charging Cooper Webb. In the end, it was Anderson, Tomac, Roczen.

250 RACE ONE
RJ Hampshire took a flag-to-flag victory in 250 Race One. Jett Lawrence started in third, but quickly moved past Levi Kitchen into second. Then he promptly fell down. He remounted in eighth, right behind Cameron McAdoo, who was riding despite a bad crash in qualifying. Jett started making up ground quickly. Pierce Brown moved into second and was able to hold of Lawrence all the way home.

250 RACE TWO

The events of 250 Race Two can only be described as chaos. Cameron McAdoo and Phil Nicoletti got into the lead while Jett Lawrence fell within the first first few turns. In the following laps, Peirce Brown, RJ Hampshire, Max Vohland and what seemed like half of the field crashed, all independently of one another, while Nicoletti continued to lead. Stilez Robertson and Jett Lawrence both managed to pass Nicoletti in the final laps. Lawrence managed to climb back to sixth. RJ Hampshire crashed a second time and retired.

250 RACE 3
Jett Lawrence won the third race easily, but the damage was already done. Levi Kitchen, by finishing a distant second, earned his first overall Supercross victory. RJ Hampshire clearly hadn’t recovered from his race two crash. He started poorly, then crashed again. In the end, he caught up to 13th.
