2020 DAYTONA SUPERCROSS TRACK PREVIEW

AMA Supercross will arrive at Daytona International Speedway this weekend for the 10th round of the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross series. For the 13th consecutive year, the course will be designed by five-time Daytona winner Ricky Carmichael. It takes 6600 tons of dirt to create the track on the infield of the Daytona Trioval. Thankfully, they don’t use telephone poles for whoops like they did in the old days. For extended coverage of Monster Energy Supercross, click here.

.Here are some Daytona fun facts:

  • Supercross has been running at Daytona annually since 1971. Gunnar Lindstrom won the inaugural Daytona motocross aboard a Husqvarna
  • Justin Brayton became the oldest rider to win a Monster Energy AMA Supercross event with his victory in the 450SX class just four days before his 34th birthday in 2018.
  • To date, 30 different riders have won at Daytona, with 5-time champion Ricky Carmichael leading all riders.
  • Nine riders (Eli Tomac, Pierre Karsmakers, Darrell Schultz, Jeff Stanton, Mike Kiedrowski, Jeremy McGrath, Ryan Villopoto, Chad Reed and Carmichael) have won the event in back-to-back years, with just three riders (Stanton, Kiedrowski and Carmichael) collecting three consecutive wins. In fact, Stanton and Carmichael both won an unprecedented four-straight from 1989-92 and 2000-03, respectively.
  • Last year, Eli Tomac dominated the event, although it only stopped the bleeding somewhat in his struggling 2019 title chase. This year, he’s doing much better. He arrives tied for the points lead with Ken Roczen.

450 POINTS

1 Eli Tomac 200
2 Ken Roczen 200
3 Justin Barcia 177
4 Cooper Webb 176
5 Jason Anderson 151
6 Malcolm Stewart 137
7 Adam Cianciarulo 128
8 Justin Hill 127
9 Justin Brayton 116
10 Dean Wilson 113

Eli isn’t making any friends along the way this year, though. Both Justin Barcia and Blake Baggett were unhappy with Tomac’s riding habits at Atlanta. Baggett left the track without confrontation, but Barcia was outspoken and angry.

Chase Sexton seems to be the man to beat in in the 250 East class, although RJ Hampshire and Shane McElrath can do it and have. Jordon Smith and Jeremy Martin are definitely in the “Might Win” category at Daytona.

250 EAST POINTS

1 Chase Sexton 75
2 Shane Mcelrath 70
3 Rj Hampshire 61
4 Garrett Marchbanks 53
5 Jordon Smith 47
6 Jeremy Martin 44
