2002 KAWASAKI TESTS–JUNE 24

2002 KAWASAKI TESTS–JUNE 24

KAWASAKI KLX110
Issue: May 2002
What we thought: Kawasaki took notice of the Honda XR50 craze and built one with twice as much motor. The KLX is basically an engine surrounded by tiny wheels.
Most popular mods: Big Gun pipe, BBR and Fast Minis bar risers.
Bottom line: With a little uncorking, the KLX is king of the sub-minis. It makes you wonder where it will all end.

KAWASAKI KX250
Issue: November 2001
What we thought: If Kawasaki had stood still, the KX250 would be mildly dated by now. But in fact, the KX moved backwards for 2002, and has less top-end power than the 2001 model. The bike can be improved, but mostly by converting it piece by piece into a 2000 or 1999 model.
Most popular mods: Ceet seat foam, V-Force reed, moderate port work.
Bottom line: This bike is still fun and friendly, but not competitive at the top levels.

KAWASAKI KX125
Issue: November, 2001
What we thought: The chassis isn?t as good as the Honda?s, and the motor is just as bad. The KX125 is dated and, frankly, slow. Kawasaki is working on all-new KXs that are long overdue.
Most popular mods: Additional flywheel weight, extensive porting.
Bottom Line: Unless you?re James Stewart, racing the KX is doing it the hard way.

KAWASAKI KX65
Issue: April 2002
What we thought: Kawasaki cleaned up most of the issues that racers had with the 2001 model, giving the bike better suspension and fixing durability problems. The 2002 KX is more competitive, but the KTM still has an edge.
Most popular mods: R&D pipe, R&D suspension linkage.
Bottom line: There are only two 65s available and the Kawasaki comes in second.
