10 QUESTIONS FOR RYAN DUNGEY

Is it difficult to make the switch to outdoors after winning the SX title?

THIS YEAR WAS MY ROOKIE SEASON IN 450S AND WE CLIMBED TO THE TOP AND WON THE TITLE. IT WAS AN AMAZING SEASON BUT WE DECIDED TO GO ALL THE WAY TO VEGAS WITH OUR SUPERCROSS PREPARATION, AND THAT PAID OFF WITH A WIN IN VEGAS. I FEEL THE TEAM WAS PREPARED FOR HANGTOWN BUT THE WEEKEND JUST DIDN’T GO AS WELL AS WE WOULD HAVE LIKED. I MEAN 8TH PLACE SET US BACK A LITTLE IN POINTS BUT IT SHOULDN’T BE TOO BIG OF A HOLE TO DIG OUT FROM.

Is there a big difference in your bike?

I REALLY LIKE THE ROCKSTAR MAKITA SUZUKI RM-Z450. IT SUITS ME REALLY WELL, AND ALWAYS HAS. I WAS ABLE TO RIDE RICKY’S BIKE A COUPLE OF TIMES WHILE I WAS STILL RIDING IN THE 250S AND I’VE ALWAYS FELT COMFORTABLE ON IT. EVEN RIDING DES NATIONS LAST YEAR, I WAS ABLE TO PICK IT UP IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND FEEL REALLY GOOD. HAVING THE SAME TEAM, THE SAME GROUP OF GUYS AROUND ME HAS ALSO BEEN REALLY BIG.

When you’re the point leader (as in Supercross all year), does it make a big difference in strategy at each race?

I REALLY LOOK AT EACH RACE AS AN INDIVIDUAL EVENT. AND ALTHOUGH THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS THE GOAL, DOING WELL WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT WORKS HAND IN HAND WITH A GOOD CONSISTENT SEASON.

What was the big difference between Hangtown and Texas?

WE REALLY HAD A GOOD COUPLE OF WEEKS OF RIDING AND TESTING AS A TEAM. I MEAN I WAS OUT IN FLORIDA AND THE TEAM WAS AT THE SHOP IN CHINO, BUT WE WERE WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE STRIDES TOWARD GETTING BACK TOWARD THE FRONT. IT WAS A TRUE TEAM EFFORT.

Which type of track do you like best?

I DON’T THINK I HAVE A FAVORITE TYPE OF TRACK OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. I CAN SAY I LIKE HARD PACK, RUTTY AND SANDY, ALL OF THEM ARE FUN TO RIDE. I LIKE SUPERCROSS AND MOTOCROSS. I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT WHAT MAKES EACH TRACK DIFFERENT AND WORK ON THE THINGS THAT IT TAKES TO BE GOOD ON EACH.

What’s your biggest strength?

NOT REALLY SURE WHAT #1 IS BUT I’D LIKE TO THINK MY WORK ETHIC AND PREPARATION RANK UP THERE SOMEWHERE. I MEAN WE HAVE TWO LONG SEASONS EACH YEAR AND IN ORDER TO SUCCEED YOU HAVE TO PUT IN THE WORK DURING THE WEEK AS WELL AS THE WEEKENDS.

What’s your biggest weakness?

IF YOU DON’T KNOW THEN I’M NOT TELLING!

What are Reed’s strengths and weaknesses?

REED IS A RIDER THAT HAS A STRONG WILL ON THE TRACK. HE HAS THE SPEED AND DETERMINATION TO BE GOOD INDOORS AND OUT.

What are Alessi’s strengths and weaknesses?

ALESSI IS AMAZING AT STARTS. I DON’T KNOW HOW HE DOES IT, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE HE CAN GET A START FROM ANYWHERE.

Is there a young rider who has surprised you this year?

I THINK TOMAC HAS SURPRISED A LOT OF PEOPLE THIS YEAR FOR SURE. I HEARD HE WAS GOING TO BE FAST BUT TO WIN HIS FIRST TIME OUT? THAT’S PRETTY COOL.
